IMPLABS is a professional metallurgical consulting laboratory that caters for the engineering, manufacturing, heat treatment, foundry and steel merchant industries. IMPLABS offers a wide range of metallurgical testing services. These currently include hardness testing, mechanical testing, chemical analysis, and metallographic examination and consultations of ferrous and non ferrous materials. IMPLABS is situated in the heart of the industrial area of Benoni, Gauteng, but service customers nationwide. IMPLABS was originally founded in Boksburg in late 1996 and started operating in January of 1997 as part of a larger group of companies. The labs then divorced from the group in 2004 in order to expand its reach and customer-serving abilities. Celebrating its 20th year in industry in 2017, IMPLABS continues to serve the steel and engineering industries ensuring that the quality of their input materials conform to international standards. The company is currently managed and owned by Mark Gertzen and Paul Heintzberger, each of whom have over 30 years of experience in their respective fields. Mark has run the Mechanical Testing Department since the company’s inception, whilst Paul has recently joined as the Section Head for Metallurgy. The majority of IMPLABS staff have achieved long service awards of 15 years. IMPLABS is an exempt micro enterprise (EME), and supports BBBEE rated companies where possible. IMPLABS is fully accredited according to the ISO 17025:2005 accreditation system, by the Laboratory Accreditation Bureau based in the United States of America. IMPLABS has a fully equipped workshop which allows for all sample preparation to be controlled in house. This includes cutting, turning, milling, grinding and polishing all test specimens into standard test pieces. IMPLABS is ISO 17025 accredited and has been offering professional and affordable services to both mining and manufacturing industries of South Africa and abroad. IMPLABS performs chemical analysis for the purpose of material identification, material classification and quality control monitoring. Chemical analysis is used to determine the content of the elements in the material. A change in the ratio of the elements is what determines the hardness, strength, ductility and other physical properties of that specific alloy. The process of testing materials at a specified temperature, to determine its suitability for its intended application. The tests are carried out by measuring properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, hardness and impact resistance. Mechanical testing also includes the bend testing of welds. The process of revealing the microstructure of metals and their alloys. By means of correct sample preparation, polishing and etching techniques, the structures are assessed using an optical microscope.
