Hospice East Rand is a community-based organisation whose mission is to provide high quality holistic and non-discriminatory care for the terminally ill and their families, irrespective of their ability to pay. This mutually beneficial relationship fosters intercultural learning between both hospices and creates resource mobilisation for the African programme. In 1987 a little house in Ampthill Avenue was purchased, renovated and utilised as a centre. The centre is used for training courses, fundraising, administration and a day care centre for ambulant patients. In 1990 an additional property (directly behind the main property) in Victoria Avenue, Benoni, was purchased and in 1995 this house was renovated into a five bed In Patient Unit. In 1998 with the invaluable financial assistance of the Timken Foundation and Murray & Roberts, a five bed (single rooms) Frail Care Centre was added. Take a look at the Hospice East Rand's Historical Scrapbook to see what has been achieved since its inception in These achievements are directly attributable to the support and generosity of the public. How to access hospice care and place a patient on the hospice programme. Once the intake documentation has been completed, and a medical report from the patient's doctor has been received, a Nurse from hospice will do an assessment visit and discuss the way forward. We are a non-profit organisation and in order to be able to continue providing our services we need to raise funds through various projects in the community. Arrangements for this are made through the hospice homecare nurse. Palliative care is the active, total care of patients whose disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment. Control of pain and other distressing symptoms and psychological, social and spiritual support is paramount. The goal of palliative care is the achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families. Hospice East Rand provides palliative care for patients with advanced, progressive disease. The focus is on homebased care and extends into the bereavement period. Our palliatively trained nurses visit patients in their own homes. The nurse co-ordinates the care and liaises with other hospice team members such as the doctor, social worker, community care workers, volunteer caregivers and other professionals who may be involved in treating the patient. These services are invaluable to patients providing an outing with a programme of interesting activities, a tasty meal and the company of other people. The changing dynamics of family life, which are brought about by terminal illness, can impair communication and cause anguish and fear. Caregivers are volunteers who have specialised training, and have the necessary counselling skills to discuss problems. This can make a meaningful difference to patients and families enabling them to be more effectively involved in all aspects of their care. Our Hospice offers bereavement counselling to anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one.
